Summary of Room 15's learning on Matariki!!!

Matariki

Matariki is the Maori name for the group of stars also known as the Pleiades star cluster or The Seven Sisters.  It is known as the traditional Maori New Year.
The Maori New Year or Matariki begins in the last few days of May. The new year is marked at the sighting of the next new moon which occurs during June.
Matariki has two meanings, both referring to a tiny constellation of stars; Mata Riki (Tiny eyes) and Mata Ariki (Eyes of God).

Research On Matariki

We used the COWS to research on Matariki.  Mr Curry (our student teacher) designed us an information transfer grid and it made researching really easier!  BY INAYA

Now we understand what Matariki is!!

Maths - Tessellation

In Maths we learnt about Tessellations.  Tessellation means covering a surface by repeated use of a single shape without gaps or overlapping.  We worked in groups using foam shapes.  Have a look at our photos: By AMBER

Thinking hard- how will these shapes tessellate!!!

Emily's group- great team work!!!

Nearly done!!

Great work: looks like this group understands what tessellation is

In the studio at the Art Gallery

With Mandy- modelling to us!
Inside the Studio, we created our own art helped by Mandy and our parent helpers. First we wrote our names and then decorated it with things which reflected our identity (Who we are).  Some things we used were: a blank paper for our background, crepe papers, artificial, pipe cleaners and many more.
Waiting for Mandy's instruction
